SUperior SU Version 2 Patches

Latest patch is version 2.0.0.19 as of September, 4th 2005

On this page you will find the latest patch that is available for SUperior SU version 2.

Note:The latest patch will always contain the corrections made in previous patches, much like Windows Service Packs work. This means: If you have applied the latest patch (currently: 2.0.0.19) which you will always find on this page, there is no need to install older patches (like 2.0.0.9 or 2.0.0.11 or 2.0.0.15 or 2.0.0.18) onto the same computer, simply because the files from older patches are all included in the latest patch in the exact same version as in previous patches.

You find a list of problems that this patch fixes below (together with a list of those problems that have been fixed in previous patches and which are contained in this latest patch). So if you know your patch level and you see that in later patch levels problems are fixed that don't affect you, you probably don't need to apply the latest patch level. The patches are available as self-installing executables that will run on NT4, W2K, XP and W2K3 Server. All patches are both available as packages for interactive installation, which means they apply the patch to the computer where the patches are executed, and as Remote Console Installer packages. The Remote Console Installer packages allow for remote installation of the patch onto several computers remotely.
In any case, the patch installers will backup the files that the patch replaces. This allows you to uninstall individual patches without running the risk to have an installation of SUperior SU that isn't working properly anymore. Uninstallation of patches is done via the "Software" Control Panel Applet. In case of uninstallation of a patch, the backupped files will be restored. Note also, that if you do an entire uninstall of SUperior SU, all patches and their corresponding entries in the "Software" Control Panel Applet will be removed as well so you don't have to bother with orphaned entries in this list.

Run this program to install the patches for version 2.0.0.18 remotely across the network onto computers that are running SUperior SU version 2.0.0.6 or a later patchlevel (e.g. 2.0.0.9 or 2.0.0.11 or 2.0.0.15 or 2.0.0.18)

This patch fixes the following bugs:
  • su.exe returns bogus process exit codes if the file to be started cannot be found. Error codes of su.exe in general are inconsistent between the two configuration options "Authenticate user with the SUperior SU service" and "Authenticate user with own access token", i.e. su.exe sometimes returned a non-zero exit code upon success and a zero exit code although it failed. With version 2.0.0.19, su.exe always returns zero upon success and non-zero in case of a failure.(Adressed in patch level 2.0.0.19)
Note: If you are running su.exe from within scripts or batch files, please see if they need to be adapted for su.exe now always returning proper error codes.
  • The SUperior SU Remote Query Console (suremqry.exe) as well as the remote installer have problems determining information about the fixed disks of a remote computer, especially in case the remote computer is running Windows XP SP2 or Windows 2003 Server SP1. (Adressed in patch level 2.0.0.19)
  • su.exe returns an error ("CreateWindowStation error! (rc=5) Access is denied.") when started from a noninteractive desktop such as from within an active server page or a service that runs under a distinct user account. Please take a look at this note as well. (Adressed in patch level 2.0.0.18)
  • The command line for starting swtchapp.exe (aka the "Desktop Switcher") from the registry is not always quoted correctly (Adressed in patch level 2.0.0.18)
  • If the registry information about an SU installation is corrupted, the "SUperior SU Version Retrieval and Update Application" (suvrdiag.exe) will crash (Adressed in patch level 2.0.0.18)
  • If the "Smart Task Manager invocation on secondary desktops" feature is enabled, but authentication via user's own access token is specified or desktop switcher is turned off, task manager cannot be started anymore (Adressed in patch level 2.0.0.18)
  • If the "Smart Task Manager invocation on secondary desktops" feature is enabled, task manager doesn't get started with the SE_DEBUG_NAME privilege and therefore cannot kill services anymore (Adressed in patch level 2.0.0.18)
  • When running on computers with far-east IMEs enabled, a logoff from a secondary desktop would leave the secondary desktop in an orphaned state (Adressed in patch level 2.0.0.15)
  • Processes cannot be started from su via a relative path (Adressed in patch level 2.0.0.15), see also a description on how to turn on this feature here.
  • When started from a process running in the SYSTEM account, the command-line su.exe would crash (Adressed in patch level 2.0.0.15)
  • On Computers with a damaged registry swtchsvc would sometimes be started twice upon login (Adressed in patch level 2.0.0.11)
  • Computer tree control in the SUperior SU Remote Console is not always properly aligned at the bottom edge (Adressed in patch level 2.0.0.9)
  • On some computers, shutting down takes longer when SUperior SU is installed (Adressed in patch level 2.0.0.9)

    This patch installs four files in version 2.0.0.19: su.exe, runasusr.dll, sustapp.dll, suremqry.exe
    This patch installs six files in version 2.0.0.18: susrvc.exe, suproxy.exe, swtchsvc.exe, sutmhlpr.dll, suvrdiag.exe, supsu.cpl
This patch installs one file in version 2.0.0.15: signaler.exe
This patch installs one file in version 2.0.0.9: sumsg.dll
